On-demand instructions keep context lean

An Agent Skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that describes a repeatable task, its tools and its workflow. Compatible agents discover the skill and load its instructions when a prompt matches its description. A project-level CLAUDE.md file typically enters context at the start of every session, while task-specific skills consume context only when needed.

Anthropic Engineering introduced Agent Skills on October 16, 2025, then published the open standard on December 18, 2025. The format can work across Claude Code, Cursor, the Claude API and other tools that implement the convention. Compatibility still depends on each agent’s support for skill discovery, tool use and referenced scripts.
